Album Review: Anomaly – Planet Storm (Self Released)
US death metal quintet Anomaly will self-release their full-length debut album, Planet Storm, on September 17th, 2021. The album combines re-recorded, remastered versions of three songs (and intro) from 2019’s Planet Storm EP with five new tracks.
Stepping up their game, Anomaly’s full-length debut is a mighty metal effort that shows just how far they’ve come already thanks to the much improved and re-recorded songs from the 2019 EP. Fitting comfortably alongside the newer tracks, Anomaly deliver a blistering assault of heaviness with a serrated technical edge.
Frenzied instrumentation is the name of the game here but it’s far from heavy and wild for the sake of being heavy and wild. Dangerous without sounding in danger of being too much, difficult while being accessible, and filled with a mix of no-nonsense brutality and musical mastery. Anomaly’s Planet Storm really does sound like a band way further down the death metal path than the band actually is.
What’s really amazing though is as the album goes on, Anomaly show even more elements to their sound. Melody, touches of symphonic, synth effects and progressive turns. All while staying rooted in the harshness of death metal. Albeit one with a cleaner and refined sound. Are they an ‘anomaly’ in death metal? Maybe not quite that but they’re certainly doing enough different to stand out.
