Album Review: Amongst Liars – Amongst Liars (Earache Records)

Eastbourne/Brighton based modern rock band Amongst Liars will release their self-titled debut album on July 8th, 2022. An album that sees the band speak about modern life, tackling issues such as mental health, homelessness, fake news and government failings.

The band comment:

Our self-titled debut album is a commentary on the world we currently live in, tackling issues such as abuse and bullying, war mongering for financial gain, poverty, greed, fake news, unjust and deceitful political misgivings, election fraud, human rights abuses and climate change concerns. But the message of the album is one of positivity and empowerment. There are a lot of inequities in this world, but people can and do get strength and take control, through challenging and standing up to abusers, politicians and general wrong doers.

Portraying a rock sound that has a rawer edge but is rooted in modern ideas, themes and feelings, Amongst Liars showcase a hefty amount of fire and passion. All while delivering memorable, sometimes catchy, and energetic music. It’s music that gets you up and moving while also forcing you to think a little about the state of things if you’re not already.

From the opening scorching blast of Cut It to the moodier and pop-infused Reign, to the groovy foot-tapper that is Money and the infectious energy of Burn the Vision, Amongst Liars set a very high bar with the first few tracks on this album.

A bar that they are more than capable of surpassing as All Over Now is one of the more accessible and passionate displays on the entire album. Although that accessibility is consistent throughout, and sure to help Amongst Liars reach a wider array of ears.

Drown is one of the more heartfelt songs on the album, a strong showcase of melody and vocals, with a punchy chorus. Whereas Black Days shows just how anthemic Amongst Liars rock sound can be, while still having that slightly raw edge. Before Over and Over, Slave to Right and Tick the Box keep things sounding varied and full to the brim with Amongst Liars’ inimitable passion.

Ending with the one last bout of brazen rock and groove-infused music in the form of Without Grace. Amongst Liars keeping the tone steady and delivering another striking track to ensure this album won’t be fading from the memory anytime soon.
