Album Review: All Them Witches – ATW (New West Records)
All Them Witches hail from Nashville, Tennessee and play a thunderous mix of hard rock, dark neo-blues, and heady psychedelia. ATW is their fifth full-length LP coming fresh off the back of an appearance at this year’s Download Festival in the UK and is set for a full release on September 28th through New West Records.
Looking for something that breaks away from the norm? Well, All Them Witches’ new album might just be what you’re looking for. Starting off the wacky and unkempt album is Fishbelly 86 Onions. A track that gets under the skin with its repetitive guitar groove, punctuated by spoken word like vocals. It’s a mental trip of a track.
Workhouse settles the tone down a bit with its bluesy rock beat. A really catchy number especially as the vocals really get to shine here and the tip/tap style of drumming really catches the ear. That level of ear-worming tunes continues as 1st vs. 2nd brings bouncy rock vibes, Half-Tongue’s sultry melodies will win over many people and Diamond’s heavy psychedelic rhythm is like staring at a lava lamp for 8 hours.
They’re a talented bunch with just one obvious flaw. Knowing when to call time on a track. With the likes of Harvest Feast, that comes 5 minutes into a 10+ minute track.
Still, it’s not like that makes it a bad album. There is no escaping the unique sound of All Them Witches and both HTJC with its soft, haunting melody and Rob’s Dream with its final tripped, hazy and foot-tapping rock rhythm ending things strongly.
