Album Review: Akerbeltz – Merciless (BlackSeed Productions)

Five years after the release of the previous Satanic album, Akerbeltz returns with another ritual of unholy black metal. A solo project, Akerbeltz was created in 1996 and has been regularly putting out releases devoted to the black arts. Merciless will released on March 31st, 2022 via BlackSeed Productions.

A black metal tome for the ages, Akerbeltz is unashamedly old-school and undeniably harsh on the ears and mind. A 9-track album that oozes darkness and bleeds blackness. Akerbeltz searching the murkiest and most horrifying depths of hell to find a sound that is as nasty as can be.

Fans of the blackest metal are going to lap this up like hungry hellhounds.

Above the Darkness, Kingdom of Terror, End at the Gallows and Rejected from the Vortex. The first handful of tracks are the sound of wretched horror and miserable suffering. The production job on the album giving it a really raw edge, serrated and flesh tearing.

Don’t let those words confuse you though, this is a delightfully insane slab of black metal that appeals to the evil in all of us. You’ll know within a track or two if it’s for you, but by the halfway point and the true incarnation of devilish heavy metal aka Bearers of the Light, you’re either all in or hiding away in fear.

Carry on? Be brave as Everyone Else’s Extinction, Litanies of the Restless, The Fall and Zozo Demon are what await. A second half that is as horrible and harsh as anything heard on the first, but with the added exhaustion that comes from dragging your sagging flesh through the cold, dark and black swamp of bloody viscera Merciless has dredged up.

Survive, if Akerbeltz lets you.
