Album Review: Ageless Oblivion – Suspended Between Earth and Sky (Apocalyptic Witchcraft Recordings)

After a period of dormancy, UK death metal outfit Ageless Oblivion return to the fold with new album “Suspended Between Earth and Sky” – a statement of intent that aims to solidify their place in the world of extreme metal. It will be released on April 30th, 2021 via Apocalyptic Witchcraft Recordings.

Being heavy is hardly enough these days in death metal, unless you’re super-heavy. No, you need to showcase a wider range of ideas in most cases. Especially if you want to get noticed. Ageless Oblivion understands this and while being the ‘popular’ death metal band on the block was unlikely to be a high priority to them, they certainly do a lot right to get them attention.

Unrelenting death metal savages, let’s get that clear from the start. Ageless Oblivion are a refined beast and Suspended Between Earth and Sky is aggressive, in your face and spewing a cacophony of heavy noise out. Across 7 tracks and 52 minutes of music, they combine face-melting riffage, blistering blasts of bass and drums, and feral vocal howls of the most guttural kind. Be under no illusions, Ageless Oblivion will tear you a brand new hole across the entirety of the album.

That needed to be said because now the other parts, the stuff that makes Suspended Between Earth and Sky so compelling, are next. We’re taking about having damn fine rhythm. Turning a frenzy of instruments into something that sounds utterly huge. Carefully delving into a bag of other metal styles to occasionally drip feed a bit of black metal or doom here and there. Crafting atmosphere without resorting to a load of effects and sounds.

There’s some incredible sounds going on here but perhaps the most impressive thing is how elaborate many of the tracks are. Not in a technical or progressive way but rather how each track is shaped and contains a constantly smooth surface regardless of the jagged instrumentation.
