Album Review: Æsthetica – Sonorous Æon (Esetiske Studier/Fysisk Format)
Following in the footsteps of the likes of Black Sabbath, Swans and Godspeed comes Æsthetica. Their doom-laden debut album, Sonorous Æon is out on December 8th 2017 via Esetiske Studier/Fysisk Format.
Æsthetica certainly have a unique sound that they can proudly call their own. Sonorous Æon might be a doom album at heart but it doesn’t stop there. Elements of post-rock, progressive blues rock & more results in an unusual but stimulating listen.
Opener Haze drifts along on a Sabbath-style of riffing, Todesfuge brings a pulsing rhythm that is calming in its presence before the prolonged La Paz echoes out. Building in volume, the melody & rhythm seems designed to unbalance as it increases in force.
Gates calms things down again with a soft & faint melody before Worshipper brings the Sabbathy doomy beat back to the forefront. A poignant ritual of a track, its sorrowful vocals alongside wicked sounding riffs & a memorable drum beat stands out.
An impressive doom/post rock release ends on the unsettling Ekstasis. A track that floats along until it ups the speed before ending on a lengthy piece of lovely melody. A powerful finale.
