Album Review: Acid Mass – Agonizer (Morbid And Miserable Records/Bonepick Records)
Thrash/speed metal band Acid Mass will release their new album ‘Agonizer’ on September 22nd, 2023, via Morbid and Miserable Records/Bonepick Records.
As no-nonsense as it gets, Acid Mass are a raw and chaotic band rooted in the old school thrash and speed metal style. Where, across the ten tracks of Agonizer, they create a manic level of noise that is both brash and brutal. Melody is not an aspect of their sound in any way, instead the focus is on complete and utter destruction.
Most of the tracks are kept short, Acid Mass want to leave you feeling like you’ve been dragged behind a speeding truck by your ankles, and it certainly works. From the moment Infernal Militia kicks off, the blood is thumping loudly in the veins. The instruments and vocals are at war, it carries on into the mayhem that comes from Blood in the Air, and reaches a monumental level of speed and discordance with Altar, Christ Crusher, and Left to Burn.
It’s a cacophony of heaviness, Acid Mass are unrelenting, and their power isn’t diminished by the rough and raw sound of the album. Sacrament of Filth is an apt title as it sees Acid Mass blending thrash ferocity with punk sensibilities. Then there is Mental Hell and Torture Rack, a pair of garish and guttural head-bangers. Before the heavy havoc is wrapped up with the possible Metal Gear Solid inspired Shadow Moses, a more nuanced thrash effort from Acid Mass, and the furious showcase of empathic speed that is the title track.
It isn’t going to change the world, but with it, Acid Mass might very well have a hand in burning it down.
