Album Review: A Swarm of the Sun – The Woods (Version Studio Records)
Swedish post-rock duo A Swarm of the Sun will release their fourth album on January 11th 2019 via Version Studio Records. Titled “The Woods”, this new album follows-up the band’s critically acclaimed 2015-release “The Rifts” and sees the duo expanding its predecessor’s signature sound of chilling, emotional and sometimes unsettling post-rock into even deeper levels of haunting and unnerving soundscapes.
Haunting, cold and isolating. The Woods is post-rock at its finest and its most troubling. Three lengthy tracks that take us on a journey through a marinade of sounds. Each one leaving deep and painful scars behind but ones that are necessary for you to fully understand. This is an album of experiences and as chillingly emotional as it can be, it isn’t one you should avoid experiencing.
All of those feelings are expressed without a single lyric on Blackout. Those make themselves known on the title track. Whispered and peaceful while a low tone plays out on the background. It keeps it subtle for quite a while before erupting into a heavier and more impactful post track, one that is driven forward by complex riffs, drums and effects.
Finally An Heir to the Throne layers the darkness on even thicker and the end result is one that is truly depressing in nature but exciting none the less. It’s sour and dour but very appealing, a summation of the album overall.
