Album Review: A Horrible Death To A Horrible Man – Days Gone By (VS77 Records)
Danish shoegaze/post metal band A Horrible Death to a Horrible Man will release its debut album ‘Days Gone By’ on May 19th, 2023, via VS77 Records.
The world of shoegaze and post metal is not short of quality bands, both old and new. So, to make an impression, A Horrible Death to a Horrible Man certainly have to go do something special to stand out.
Beginning with a haunting, abrasive, and mournful effort in the form of Other. This opening track is akin to falling into darkness where the initial panic is replaced with an acceptance that allows you to reach a state of euphoria. Falling for so long that serenity takes over and the darkness envelops completely. It’s excessive, but in a pleasing way.
Of note in that opener, and going forward, are the vocals. A more ambient style that sits behind the music and feels like whispers at the back of the mind. It’s a different touch that makes A Horrible Death to a Horrible Man stand out. Especially when they continue to provide haunting pinnacles like Too Soon, First Light, and Fails. The middle portion of the album is profoundly enchanting, radiating emotion, and deeply expressive.
With the title track, the weight of this dramatic and diabolical post heavy sound crashes down and leaves the mind askew as it tries to recover. A Horrible Death to a Horrible Man continuing to infuse heart-wrenching melody with abrasive tones. As moving, as it is monumental.
Finally, Breathe wraps up the experience with some of the moodiest sounds, most melodically-charged, and most ethereal elements yet. A big finale that helps make this a modern post and shoegaze hit.
