Album Review: Matt Finucane – The Outer World (Self Released)

Brighton-based musician and self-confessed workaholic Matt Finucane will release his latest outing “To The Outer World” on April 23rd 2021.

Chilled out alternative rock music with punchy rhythms and catchy choruses, Matt Finucane delivers a nice slice of body-moving music here. Some that you can really relax too, some you will find you want to dance too but all pretty enjoyable. Especially when there’s some extra passion thrown in and the guitar tempo heats up. Oh To Be Empty and Caught Making Signals and are good examples of this.

Elsewhere the groovy rhythm of the likes of Envy the Birds (some slight psychedelic effects here), Something That Can Help (bouncy and a bit of a sing-along) and Creature of These Times (mellow and thoughtful) keeps things interesting.

Though there are also some oddities too. The weird and jagged effects of Derision, spoken word statements and intensity is very unexpected but not unlikable. The synthy effects of Survival Suit and moodier, dirtiness of Verbal Child keep the latter part of the album varied.

It ends with the super-mellow tones of Stellar Chorus, something that could easily lull you to sleep if need be.

There’s plenty to like about this album and there’s no denying Matt Finucane has bags of imagination. Overall, the end result has more tracks that hit than miss but what it is lacking is a killer track or two. Lots of good music, not a lot of great music. That might sound harsh but it’s not meant to be. Across 11 tracks Matt Finucane delivers a strong showcase of his alternative rock talents.
