Album Review: Lazer Beam – Lazer Beam (LCF Records)

Raised under the scorching Arizona sun, Lazer Beam – the solo desert pop project of multi-instrumentalist, Lucust French – is heavy, somewhat demented but never anything less than original. Lazer Beam’s self-titled debut will be released on the 9th April 2021 via LCF Records.

A fascinating aspect of this release is that French aka Lazer Beam chose to record his music outside and on the move. Songs were cut in the heart of Prescott National Forest, East Maricopa County, and countless other locations. While it’s not something many will notice, thanks to the quality of the production, it is a cool titbit.

What’s also pretty damn cool, is the music that comes from this talented solo artist.

Kicking off with the energetic Sink or Swim. The combination of otherworldly vocals, coarse groove and hallucinogenic guitar riffs makes for a strange but interesting start. It is followed by the grungy and fuzzy oddity that is In the Moonlight and Don’t Tell, with its moody moments that then burst into punky life.

Keeping the unique ideas rolling on; Sno Burn, You Drive Me Crazy and Take Me Home are where the album really hits its stride. The latter of three is arguably the best track on the album too. Simply with its awesome upbeat vibe and fun lyrical content (boy-meets-girl).

After that, Lazer Beam lay the fuzz down thickly with Damn the Reptiles. Get super-weird but groovy as all hell with Silver and then wrap things up with the blend of eerie psychedelia and forceful rock that is Adam & Eve.

It’s weird. It’s complex. It’s different. All of that makes it a must listen.
