EP Review: God Shame the Queen – Public Service Announcement (Self Released)

God Shame The Queen are David Kabbouri (drums/vocals) and Jack Monnaf (bass/vocals), a stoner/punk duo from Birmingham formed over lockdown. The duo jammed out the four songs that make up ‘Public Service Announcement’ quickly and recorded everything themselves. As the band name suggests, GSTQ do not shy away from social issues. The EP was released on February 27th 2021.

Fuzzy and feedback laden, God Shame the Queen might share a lot in common with the stoner and punk scenes but they also have fairly obvious connections with the UK noise rock collective too. This four-track debut is this duo well and truly announcing themselves with a hyperactive blast of noise that is only bass, drums and vocals. How’s that for the sound of buzzing in your skull?

The thing is, this is still an EP with a ton of groovy rhythm and catchiness. Exemplified by the kick-ass opening track, Stains of Love. A track you’ll find yourself listening to over and over again.

Although the following Greedy and Spanish-sung Despierta are just as strong in that excellent short, sharp and fuzzy way. That God Shame the Queen also has something to say across these tracks just makes them all the more impactful.

Though they also have range as the last track, the title track, shows. A 6-minute effort, almost double the length of any other track, here God Shame the Queen show just how deep their fuzz stoner sound can go. The bass is a proper weapon in their hands.
