Album Review: Los Disidentes Del Sucio Motel – Polaris (Klonosphere Records/Ripple Music)

Nearly five years after the release of Human Collapse, French heavy rockers Los Disidentes Del Sucio Motel are back with their fourth album ‘Polaris’, which is now set for release on April 2nd 2021 via Klonosphere Records/Ripple Music.

Pushing the boundaries of heavy rock and psychedelia, Los Disidentes Del Sucio Motel are one of the more unusual bands to emerge from France. Constantly evolving, constantly experimenting and constantly releasing game-changing records. There is no disputing that from the start, with the short intro of o and chuggy ethereal-tinge of Blood-Planet Child, that they’re already proving that Polaris is going to continue that trend.

Of course, that’s just the start. How’s the rest of the album? The short answer is bloody awesome. Dark Matter showcases a modern cleanliness to the vocals while dealing out jagged riffs and crunchy drum beats. Blue Giant transitions from airiness to intense heaviness all while sounding grand beyond any expectations. The Plague builds upon the high vibes with a stringing combo of glorious vocals and wilder guitar parts.

The early impression of greatness that the album gave off, confirmed to be totally correct by the half way point. Incredible in fact, especially when you realise there’s still so much more to come.

That more then comes in head-banging style with the excellent Alpha Ursae Minoris before Earthrise pulls the rug out from underneath the feet. How? By delivering a start that is echoing weirdness that plods along in a methodical fashion before rising up in volume but sticking with a similar tempo. Totally unexpected but not surprising considering the wealth of ideas already coming from Polaris.

It’s almost exhausting to keep up as the last few tracks continue this unique and puzzling journey of rock ideas. The Key’s sombre touches playing off the weighty percussion, Horizon’s dreamy verses exploding into life like a star going supernova and The Great Filter’s sharp reminder that no matter how high Los Disidentes Del Sucio Motel can make you feel, they can also deliver heartfelt and touching lows with their melodies.

An untouchable album. There’s a reason why the rock world gets excited when this band releases something.
