EP Review: Distant – Dusk Of Anguish (Unique Leader)

Distant, a 6-piece crushing down-tempo slam-infused deathcore band, hail from Rotterdam, The Netherlands and Bratislava, Slovakia. The band are set to release Dusk of Anguish via Unique Leader on 19th March 2021.

Dusk of Anguish is the second instalment of the dreadful story of Tyrannotophia – the realm of the doomed and the sound of the world’s damnation. Dusk shone down and an age of pain was ushered in through the ashes of the fallen kingdom. With the establishment of a new ruler of Tyrannotophia a cacophonic madness was unleashed, and waves of torment and purgatory stalked its lands.

Let’s head back into the realm of Tyrannotophia, a place where hellish and deeply disturbing events play out. Where Distant tell the stories of the horror in brutalising deathcore fashion.

Having thoroughly enjoyed 2020’s Dawn of Corruption and learning so much more about Tyrannotophia in an interview, it is with great excitement that we cross the threshold again. A threshold that is darker but just as savage as what has been experienced previously. Proven by the short and chaotic opener, The Offering.

Then we get the added ferociousness of The Last Ten Seconds of Life’s John Robert C as he guests on the title track and hell is unleashed. To call this an intense listen is to play down just how vicious this track is. Blast beats, slashing guitars, ruthless vocals and well utilised effects, this one hits very hard.

As does the following The Eternal Lament, the squeal and screaming of instruments, almost too much to take. Before Alpha Wolf’s Lochie Keogh lends his impressive pipes to Cyrogenesis. A track that somehow proves to be even more forceful and fiercer than anything heard so far. A veritable pit opener that few will get out of alive. The breakdown enough, will crack skulls and break bones.

Finally, it’s the pairing of Graveborn and Rakva that wraps up a blistering new release from Distant. A continuation of their detailed ferocity and nauseating barbarity, something that really shouldn’t be as appealing as it is.

Distant really are one of the modern deathcore greats and releases like Dusk of Anguish will only make that statement less and less bold sounding.
