Album Review: Kankar – Dunkle Millennia (Eisenwald)
Kankar are a black metal duo hailing from Thuringia, Germany. The band began in 2016, and two years later released their debut EP, Elemental Fury. Now, Kankar make their first grand statement with ‘Dunkle Millennia’, the duo’s debut full-length. Out on March 19th, 2021 via Eisenwald.
One foot in the core chaos of black metal, the other dipping in and out of a variety of genres, Kankar eschew traditions while being undoubtedly savage. Dunkle Millennia will more than deliver the fix all black metal fans crave.
What makes the album stand out that little more are those other elements and inspirations. Be it Kankar leaning towards death metal here and there. Or Kankar throwing out some classic metal riffs or rock & roll groove. Intriguing stuff that is not so obvious as to detract from the fiery blaze of blackened metal.

Aside from one track, the detailed and exciting Zerfall des Lichts, each track is concise and tight. No padding, each one a powerful statement of blackened passion. A constant pull to the darker side with all the demonic power that Kankar can summon. It is very exciting stuff and thanks to the moments where they shift their sound, never gets boring.
In fact, tracks like Krater in Sarx, Thüringer Schwarzmetall, Festmahl für die Krähen and Pilgerreise are downright fantastic.
If the goal was to make an impact, Kankar have certainly achieved it here.
