Album Review: Valdaudr – Drapsdalen (Soulseller Records)
Time travel to the glorious nineties of the Norwegian black metal era with the epic debut album of Valdaudr! Drapsdalen will be released on February 26th 2021 via Soulseller Records.
The word ‘raw’ can be overused when describing black metal that harks back to the early days of the scene. It seems as though it’s a requirement to make yourself sound as though you’re ripped straight from that era should it be what you wish to focus on. That has its drawbacks even if fans of the classic sound will find themselves on a nostalgic trip into the past.
The word ‘raw’ can certainly be applied to Valdaudr and their new album, Drapsdalen. An album that drips in 90’s black metal vibes and has no interest in meeting your expectations of sound in 2021. This is an old-school record and sounds like it, albeit with a hell of a lot more clarity to the guitars (thankfully).
Such an ode to the olden days means there’s no screwing around with the core sound here. Valdaudr projectile vomit up steaming bile across 7 tracks of utter chaos and sickening savagery. That they do such a good job of it, is why such disgusting intensity is so welcome.
It’s not just old school black metal fans that will fall in love with their twisted take as this is an album that will appeal to those desperate for something with no-nonsense aggression. The heart of black metal is here and beating as strong as ever. Blackened, twisted and filled with evil intentions, Valdaudr are a harsh reminder that this style of metal will never truly die.
