Album Review: Caedes Cruenta – Of Ritual Necrophagia and Mysterious Ghoul Cults (Helter Skelter/Regain Records)
Helter Skelter Productions (distributed & marketed by Regain Records) presents Caedes Cruenta’s highly anticipated third album, Of Ritual Necrophagia and Mysterious Ghoul Cults. Out on February 12th 2021.
Having formed in 2003, Cades Cruenta are part of the legendary Greek black metal scene that includes the likes of Rotting Christ, Varathron, and Necromantia. The torch of that scene continuing to burn as brightly as it did decades before.
This isn’t the gloom of 2021 but rather the choking smoke billowing from said torch as Caedes Cruenta pour gasoline over it. Brighter and more intense as ever, black metal hasn’t sounded this intense in a while but what more should you expect from a band with the pedigree of Caedes Cruenta?
What you can expect is a cesspool of filth. Black metal played with the ferocity of death metal, very little frills and all about virulent intensity. Every violent jab of percussion, every grinding riff and every throaty roar is felt throughout the body. Mentally taxing and physically draining, the album is just over an hour long. That’s around 61 minutes of blazing hot Greek black metal with touches of grandeur to help enhance certain sections.
It leaves a deep impression in part thanks to the unrelenting approach of Caedes Cruenta and in part thanks to the sense of ceremonial, murky and enigmatic intent.
