EP Review: Lam – Liber K (Self Released)
Lam is an exciting new alternative metal group from Méribel, France and Warrington, UK. Featuring Mike Pilat on lead vocals and guitar (from acclaimed Swiss metal band Herod, ex The Ocean), George Whalley (Broohaha, Gotts Street Park) on drums, Ben Vickers and James Beedham on guitar and bass.
The name ‘Lam’ comes from an entity encountered by occultist Aleister Crowley in the 1910’s, during a ritual known as the Amalantrah Working. Lam is said to have passed through from another dimension and a portrait drawn of the entity after the event, went on to become the visual archetype for the ‘Grey’ aliens in modern popular culture.
The band formed in March 2020, and by September their first three track EP ‘Liber K’ was finished – recorded all remotely, separate from each other during the first Covid-19 lockdown.
It will be released on February 11th 2021.
We’ve said it before and we will say it again, if there is one positive from lockdowns it is that many musical artists have crafted stuff that simply may not have existed otherwise. Boredom and a ton of free time has allowed imaginations to dominate and art to be crafted.
Lam have created something of a snapshot of this time. Something weird, something wonderful and something memorable. Kicking off with Lament, soft melodies and layered vocals that build in volume lead to a jarring rhythm and heavy beat. Odd is being a kind way to describe it.
Ruin is a feisty number, progressive guitars and spitting vocals. The faster and more frenetic pace makes this a hell of a track. One that will get multiple plays in one sitting. Such is the fascinating rhythm of the track.
Don’t dwell on it for too long though as there’s one more track still to come. Absolved By Violence has the same level of kick-ass heaviness but with a fair amount more groove. Jumping between a thumping beat that has a bit of catchiness to it, to frenzied explosions of intensity. It might sound jumbled up but Lam make the flow work so very well.
It’s done before you know it. A small slice of what Lam have to offer. Let’s hope there’s more to come in the future.
