Album Review: Uncertainty Principle – Sonic Terror (Xenoglossy Productions)
Uncertainty Principle is a drone/doom metal solo project from A. White (also from Vessel of Iniquity and Crown of Ascension). The project dates back as far as 1995 and was most prolific in the early 2000s, releasing ten albums in the span of six years, before going on hold until 2019.
Sonic Terror takes tracks spanning Uncertainty Principle’s whole career, deconstructing and rebuilding them from the ground up, with an updated, improved sound and a more straightforward approach. It will be released on February 5th 2021 via Xenoglossy Productions.
The return of Uncertainly Principle comes at a time when music, regardless of its harshness, is so very much needed. Capturing the mood of a mind in turmoil, thoughts flinging everywhere, the bleakness akin to loud static… Sonic Terror is cold and dark. Where drone and doom combine to make something remarkably severe.
The distant howls of pain, the lumbering doom riffs and the hissing static that lays over everything is momentous sounding. Hugely uncomfortable, rigid in style, each track bleeds into the next and picking out specific moments or elements is difficult. Such is the ‘drone’ nature of this music.
It all sounds painful to listen too but it’s not. Though you do certainly need to have a strong taste for this style of music to fully appreciate it. It’s a difficult listen but for all its confounding ways, it is unique and very addictive. Like you can’t quite fathom what you’re hearing so you must listen on to see if it all makes sense in the end.
Does it? You’ll have to listen to find out.
