Album Review: Satanize – Baphomet Altar Worship (Helter Skelter/Regain Records)

Since 2001, Portugal’s Satanize have been prolifically pursuing their own vision of all-caps BLACK METAL. Of that prolific canon, they’ve released five full-lengths and more than twice as many EPs and splits. During that time, the longstanding duo of Reverend of Diabolical Services and Sinister Sorcery (barbaric skullhammers & poisonous hate commands) and Reverend of the Hell Legions and Macabre Tyranny (bestial strings of holocaust & low pulse desecration) have not so much “evolved” as literally devolved, locating and then desecrating the most primal expression of blackest metal they can.

Inhuman black metal, Satanize bring the sounds of hells unending suffering. Where the denizens beg for mercy, forgiveness and to have their pitiful existences concluded. There’s no so such relief to come from this band though, who serve as the voice of Lucifer himself. Spitting hateful and horrible blackness in short, steaming hot spurts, the fire and fury that comes from this album is flesh-melting stuff.

A concentrated 9-track listen, the raging heat of Satanize’s constant torrent of blackened wrath is mind-blowing. There’s no let up, no give or bending of their style. From the very start until the very end, this band spits nothing but malice and spite which really shouldn’t be as appealing as it is. Even though there’s a fair number of tracks blending and meshing into one, it really does stand out. Simply because of how much ruthlessness is behind Satanize and their ability to deliver inhuman BLACK METAL (all caps).

The bar for brutality in musical form in 2021 has been set extremely high already.
