Band Interview: Skags
Games, Brrraaains & A Head-Banging Life are pleased to bring you an interview with alternative/psychedelic rock band, Skags.
1. How did you get started as a band?
The first idea of creating a band was back in 2013 between Sotiris (Bass) and Kostas (Guitar) while they were doing their Master’s degree at the University. They had different things running at that time, and they left the idea of a band behind, but their love for music finally led them to create SKAGS four years later, in January 2017. After hearing the magnificent voice of Spyretta during a theatrical play, they asked her to join the band and this was the very first line up of SKAGS. We had members coming and going, but we found our perfect match in June 2018, with the addition of Chris (Drums) and Christina (Keyboards).
2. How would you describe your sound?
Bringing theatrical, atmospheric vocals to progressive guitar-fuelled soundscapes, to groovy bass and euphoria-dripped synth lines, our sound can best be described as Alternative Electronic Psychedelic Rock.
3. What bands/artists would you say have influenced your style of music?
We all share the love of music, however each one of us has his/her own personal taste. As a result, our music is influenced by diverse music genres, composers, and bands. It is worth mentioning though, Pink Floyd and Radiohead.
4. Has the rise of YouTube & music streaming helped or hindered you as a band?
We live in a digital era. Of course, streaming music online provides portability, transferability and ease of access to your art. You have the opportunity as a band to promote your work all around the world and reach people that 20 years ago was impossible. Nevertheless, the procedure of visiting a local record store, browsing through your favorite artists and returning home with new music in hand is an irreplaceable experience. So apart from this nostalgia, we encourage the use of streaming services, as a new band ourselves. In reality for an independent artist, apart from touring, social media and streaming platforms are the only tools that they can use in order to reach to the hearts of people.
5. What do you enjoy doing when you’re not making music?
Spyretta: I am currently an architecture student, and through my studies I’ve concluded that creation is universal: its principles, namely structure, rhythm, harmony etc are the same no matter the art form.
Chris: I love playing with my two daughters which takes up all my energy, but for creativity and inspiration, I like listening to music, watching drum lessons online, reading books and playing tabletop rpg games.
Sotiris: When I am not playing to music, I listen to it, cook and watch football matches.
Christina: I like playing more music and different genres of music! I also enjoy listening to music, watching films and spend time with friends.
6. What are your future plans musically? Tours?
The band has many plans for the future and only some of them are:
A release party for our album
A live videoclip
A new photography session
Recording and releasing our second full album
