Album Review: Frozen Soul – Crypt of Ice (Century Media Records)

An apt name, Frozen Soul lives up to its icy vision. Bringing freezing cold death metal to the masses with their brand new album, Crypt of Ice. Out on January 8th 2020 via Century Media Records.

Kicking off with the title track, a haunting intro that is akin to icy winds blowing around a long-forgotten hall of the dead transforms into a savage death metal offering. Going from fiery bursts where the speeding riffs and drum beat add some twisted energy while the vocals sound particularly devilish. To a filthy and methodical assault of crunchy heaviness.

Arctic Stranglehold doesn’t hang about, Frozen Soul racing away from the very first note but once again showcasing just how deep and dark they can go when they switch up the tempos. Hand of Vengeance’s brief gothic piano intro is not a precursor of things to come as Frozen Soul stick to what’s working for another death metal rager. No complaints though, this is savagery at its most chilling and soul-destroying.

Cold enough to give you frostbite, Wraith of Death, Merciless and Encased in Ice keep things on the dangerously icy path. The feeling of exploring a gargantuan frozen tomb is intense. Where any wrong placement of feet, will result in a plunge into nothingness.

If you’re still able to carry on through the shivering and teeth-chattering experience, the short and fiery Beat to Dust might help warm the bones up slightly. Although, it doesn’t take long for the warmth to diminish, for the darkness to encroach and the icy tendrils begin to creep in. Twist the Knife and Faceless Enemy both confirmation that this isn’t exploration anymore… it’s survival.

Which brings us to the end of this fervent death metal offering with Gravedigger. An unsurprisingly brutally heavy tome of riffs, drums, bass, and vocal roars and howls. It’s everything Frozen Soul have provided so far but still sounding wholly original and as much a part of this icy journey as everything heard so far.

It’s your own frozen grave you’re digging here. This Crypt of Ice has become your tomb.
