Album Review: Lautreamont – The Cult Of Grinning Martyrs (Self Released)

Hailing from Novorossiysk, a port city on the Black Sea in Southern Russia, the entity that is Lautreamont offer an extreme version of atmospheric and post black metal.

Following up their excellent debut album, Silence of the Deceased (released 2018), the band return with their second full-length, The Cult of Grinning Martyrs. Inspired by monstrous work “Conspiracy Against the Human Race” by Thomas Ligotti as well as the poetry of Edgar Allan Poe and of course, Isidore Ducasse. The Cult of Grinning Martyrs is a testimony of a puppet’s existence.

It will be released on December 11th, 2020.

The darkness pours from The Cult of Grinning Martyrs like a waterfall, churning up the bodies that fall in and smashing them against the rocks below. Lautreamont aim to leave a sour feeling in the pit of the stomach and a head full of shadowy thoughts. While admiring the moments of levity they provide with their cold melodies.

Although, there’s next to none of that on the uncomfortable black metal intensity of opener, Broken Claws. Lautreamont focusing on bringing the heavy guns out immediately. The discordance of their instrumentation and demonic throaty vocals is even harsher to the ears on Thanatophobia and Brotherhood of Suffering. It’s severe but not at all lacking on the likability scale.

Especially as Lautreamont keep dragging us down, deeper into their pit of gloom. Unpersons’ powerful percussion and jarring guitar ringing will leave the head whirling. A.D.W.A.D. ups the ante with a phenomenal bout of wild instrumental noise, the vocals arriving after a couple of minutes and the haunting post rhythm truly taking hold with a choking grip.

Though, there is no loosening of their hold with either Howling Dogs or the title track. Lautreamont’s unrelenting black metal bleakness reaching near-transcendent levels of mental abuse. It is a fantastic experience.
