Album Review: Focal Dystonia – Descending (in)human Flesh (Comatose Music)

The explosive fury of Focal Dystonia was summoned into bloody existence in early 2020 by multi-instrumentalist Floor van Kuijk (Korpse/Carnifloor) and drummer Florent Duployer (Anachronism/Kakothanasy). To give voice to the insanity of Focal Dystonia they then recruited a bestial battalion of torn-throat psychopaths – no fewer than twelve monstrous vocalists.

December 11th 2020 is the date set for the release of Focal Dystonia’s debut, Descending (in)human Flesh through Comatose Music.

The mystery around the vocalists doesn’t change the obvious, this record is an absolute beast of extreme metal proportions. One of 2020’s most gut-wrenching and nauseating efforts, as the 10 tracks on offer repeatedly beat the listener over the head until the brains are mush.

Death metal with grind influence, imagine the most stomach-turning scene you possibly can then think about the soundtrack to that scene. That is what we have here. An album with bloodying riffs, screeching blast-beats and vocals that range from the guttural to a drain blocked with vomit to the sound of a stuck pig squealing in fear. All coming at you in a frenzy of obliteration.

There are no melodic moments, no drops into different tempos or shifting of sound. From the very beginning; Ascending Thy Abhorrent Gods through to Pinnacle of Deranged Euphoria to the title track finale, this goes for the kill.

Turn it up loud, annoy the neighbours and enjoy 30 odd minutes of utter carnage.
