EP Review: Crostpaths – Mutated (Self Released)
Unstoppable alt-metal crew Crostpaths continue their ascension with the launch of their sophomore EP, Mutated, out Friday 27th November 2020. You can read our review of their previous self-titled EP here.
Love it or loathe it, the nu-metal revival is here. Although far from the mainstream sound that it once was, with bands like Crostpaths leading, it won’t be long before its resurgence is far more potent.
Having already made a splash last year with their self-titled EP, the Kent, UK mob return with an early Christmas present. For the fan who desperately hopes for an updated and modern take on nu-metal, Mutated is the bastard child of those dreams.
Three tracks long, the short runtime of the EP is offset by hellacious energy and a ton of hooks. A blistering effort that has the riffs and breakdowns to get the party started with some serious gusto. The fire, the eccentric energy and manic instrumentation is what does stand out. However, this is going to be polarising as all hell.
The rapping, while well done, will send a fair few people on a flashback to a musical style they’ve long hoped was dead. The smattering of electronica is out of place at times and perhaps worst of all, the choruses aren’t quite as catchy as you might have expected.
These problems do weigh Mutated down inevitably but there’s plenty of meat within the groove to sell what Crostpaths are offering to many others.
