Album Review: Obscurae – To Walk The Path Of Sorrows (American Dreams)

Obscurae’s atmospheric sophomore release To Walk The Path Of Sorrows is a fierce black metal testament to the mystery, allure, and profundity of the night. Helmed by multi-instrumentalist and magician of many hats Chad Davis (Hour of 13, Jenzeits, Subklinik), Obscurae is largely a one-person operation, drawing on Davis’ tenure in the extreme metal underground as well as his love of electronics, though cohort Matt Davis – no relation – plays bass on the record’s a-side.

To Walk The Path Of Sorrows boasts six epic, memorable tracks that showcase Davis’ propensity for the dark but lush, as well as his respect for the black metal form. Asked about his impetus in creating the album, Davis replied:

To Walk The Path Of Sorrows was dedicated to the majesty of the Night. No religions, no superstitions. Just magick for the eternal Dark.

It is out on November 27th 2020 via Chicago label American Dreams.

 

 

Dripping in atmosphere, Upon the Shadowthrone of Night has a haunting chilly start that erupts into fiery flames of raw black metal. The sort of intense ferocity that takes the breath away and leaves you gasping for air. Although there is a clear sense of grandeur. Something that is kept consistent and horrifying with Amidst the Blackfrost Towers. Whereas Into the Fullmoon Descent is the wailing and gnashing of pain and suffering.

At the halfway point of the album, one thing is for sure. Obscurae are as black as the night sky and as hellish as the lowest pits of the void.

The title track continues the unrelenting assault yet also sounds more refined while being uncontrollably wild. Whereas the icy death of Eerie Freezing Wind really highlights the lavish effects and atmosphere. Fast and furious beauty. Which brings us to the end and the finale of Stillheten, where the warm glow of light shines down upon all. A very pretty end to an album that is weighted in black metal horror for the most part.
