EP Review: Broken Empire – Noumenal World (Self Released)
Hailing from the City of Dreaming Spires (Oxford UK), Hard Rock/Metal band Broken Empire will release their new EP, Noumenal World on November 20th 2020.
Written and recorded during lock down, then mixed and mastered in Italy – Broken Empire’s 4th release is their most ambitious to date. Struggling along with the rest of the world in an unprecedented time, and with gigs off the table, the band decided to seize the extra time they suddenly had on their hands and develop a new EP building on some of their more emotive riffs and lyrics, bringing empathy and encouragement to their fans.
Kicking off their new EP with the kind of music we need to hear this year, Light of the Day is a wonderfully upbeat hard rocking opener. It’s an incredibly catchy effort that lifts the spirits and reminds you that there is ‘light at the end of the tunnel’. Kick-ass riffing, filthy licks, some extra metal venom thrown in at the end and even a stonking guitar solo, makes this a 2020 musical highlight.
Although the rebellious attitude of My Own Enemy doesn’t exactly find itself lacking either. The strong subject matter, of dealing with isolation and having just yourself for company, is conveyed well. A proper head-banger of a track.
Which leads us to the powerful and hard-hitting riff heavyweight that is The End of Us. A track that deals with loss in a monumentally heavy way. Yet it still retains that level of catchiness that embodies Broken Empire and their thoroughly enjoyable new EP.
