Album Review: Puteraeon – The Cthulhian Pulse: Call From The Dead City (Emanzipation Productions)
Swedish death metaller’s Puteraeon return with a brand new ode to all that is heavy and brutal. Based on the works of legendary horror writer, H.P. Lovecraft, The Cthulhian Pulse: Call From The Dead City is out on November 13th 2020 via Emanzipation Productions.
Lovecraft and old school Swedish death metal, it’s a match made in hell. One side bringing the savage heaviness and the other, the intrinsically mental horror. Put the two together and we have something that is designed to induce nightmarish visions. Music that will leave many a gibbering wreck, convinced that beasties that bear no tangible shape or sound are lurking in the shadows.
That’s how Puteraeon’s new album will make you feel, especially when it comes to conveying the richness of Lovecraft. However, on the simpler front, the death metal they produce also has much to be pleased about.
Puteraeon can play heavy music and with all the ferocity of those that came before them and laid the groundwork of this particular scene. From the moment Horror in Clay begins with a thumping and weighty beat, something that sounds like gigantic footsteps echoing through the skull, to the raging metal maelstrom that is The End Cometh, Puteraeon deliver on exactly what they promise.
In between those two slices of horror comes a collection of tales to terrify and delight in equal measures. Old school Swedish death metal at its modern best and a fitting tribute to a master of horror.
