Album Review: Cidesphere – Dawn Of A New Epoch (Testimony Records)

Turkish death metallers Cidesphere formed in 1998 and is considered as one of Turkey’s most respected underground bands. In 2000 they released their initial work, a split album with country-mates Suicide entitled “Dying in Confusion”, followed by the debut full-length “Interment” (Hammer Music) in 2002 before splitting in 2004.

The hunger remained though and in 2018 the band re-united and completed their second album. Called “Dawn Of A New Epoch”, Testimony Records will release Cidesphere’s sophomore album on November 13th 2020.

Sit down children, some masters of their craft are here to show you some tricks.

18 years since the release of their debut, the most impressive thing about Dawn of A New Epoch is just how much fire Cidesphere still have burning deep inside them. Death metal is ageless but if you’re half-arsing it, you’ll be found out quickly.

Cidesphere are not half-arsing it, in fact there’s a strong claim that this album can proudly sit amongst the best of extreme metal this year. Why? Well for starters it is brutally heavy and the cacophony of riffs, drums, bass and guttural vocals are immensely powerful. However, it’s not just a wall of noise as they punch out tracks of varying tempos and with ton of head-banging rhythm.

There are layers of extreme here and it means every track has something, even if it’s just a small hook, that stands out. It’s very likely that this album will cause spontaneous bouts of head-banging as well as encouraging deeper analysis through replay after replay.

Many outside of Turkey’s metal underground would likely be completely unaware of Cidesphere. We can only hope that’s no longer the case come November 13th as this is one of the most impressive returns seen some time.
