Album Review: Kimono Drag Queens – Songs of Worship (Copper Feast Records)

Taking influence from heavy psych/world music peers such as Goat, Here Lies Man and Kikagaku Moyo, Sydney 7-piece Kimono Drag Queens are coming in hot with their much-anticipated debut album Songs of Worship, after a steady stream of stellar singles over the past 4 years since their formation.

‘Songs of Worship’ is due for release digitally on the 6th of November 2020 via Copper Feast Records and will have a vinyl release to accompany it.

A different proposition, Kimono Drag Queens begin Songs of Worship in chilled out and relaxing fashion. The title track’s soft melodies cresting a colourful world that may or may not be the cause of some sort of hallucinogenic. The trip is like sinking into a super soft pile of pillows before the colours get so much more vivid and the feeling of losing control takes hold.

The psychedelic rock edge is sharpened with Hunters but there’s still a strong sense of floating throughout. With only a wild guitar solo at the end able to send the mind plummeting back down briefly. Delilah continues to prove that keeping it mellow and groovy is the way to go, although the touch of fuzziness and thick bass really works too.

In an almost sleepy fashion, Wild Animals arrives with the threat of a severe nuzzling rather than a bite. The interesting guitar rhythm, the lulling drum beat and tambourine shakes sound great. Even when the sleepiness passes and it gets a bit more lively, it’s still enticingly comforting.

However, the spirituality of this psych event is about to really take hold with Evil Desires and Willy’s World. The former, the most energetic effort and one that is quite a bit funky. While the latter, the final track, is Kimono Drag Queens turning their super-relaxing psych stance up a extra notch for something capable of putting the mind in a meditative state. You could put this on before bed and you’d sleep soundly thanks to its chilled out vibes.
