Band Interview: Ghosts of Sunset

Games, Brrraaains & A Head-Banging Life are pleased to bring you an interview with hard rock/metal band, Ghosts of Sunset.

1. How did you get started as a band?

Todd Long and I have been writing, recording, and performing music together for over 30 years. Ghosts of Sunset was an opportunity for us to pay homage to and celebrate some of the music that resonated with us deeply coming up.

2. How would you describe your sound?

Our sound is the culmination of a heavy 1980s hard rock, metal and hair metal influence, but also takes elements of everything from folk, country, pop, and classic rock. The music celebrates our collective influences and rearranges them into a new form that focuses on strong hooks with definitive storylines. We’re looking to create mini films in our songs. We want to take the listener somewhere. Born to Run by Bruce Springsteen does that and so does Warrant’s “Uncle Tom’s Cabin”. We don’t discriminate.

3. What bands/artists would you say have influenced your style of music?

Weather we had their posters on our walls as kids, or sang along with a chorus on FM Radio, if an artist was able to present songs that painted vivid pictures, we were fans. Again that can be Bob Dylan, the Beatles or the Rolling Stones, or it can be Guns N Roses, Motley Crue, Faster Pussycat, RATT and LA Guns. The Beatles could describe a psychedelic scene like “Lucy In the Sky with Diamonds” and Guns N Roses could tell the story of the gritty LA streets in “Welcome to the Jungle”. Both are equals to Ghosts of Sunset.

4. Has the rise of YouTube & music streaming helped or hindered you as a band?

Things like Youtube and streaming have opened up a world of instant gratification and discovery to music fans. You literally type in a search and a song or video is at your fingertips. The negative side of that is since listeners don’t have to work as hard to discover music, it tends to hold less value to them.

5. What do you enjoy doing when you’re not making music?

Personally, I enjoy running and spending time with my family. Honestly though, there really isn’t a time I’m not working on music. I liken it to a minister. A true man of the cloth is always preaching the gospel. Ghosts of Sunset are always preaching the gospel of rock n roll. We live this.

6. What are your future plans musically? Tours?

Continue promoting our single “Miles In-Between” on Golden Robot Records. Then in October we’ll release a second single and our full EP titled “Headed West” will be released in November. Some talk of 2021 touring has been tossed around. Select festival dates and maybe joining a tour for a leg or two. We’re ready to get back out there. There’s nothing better than spending time with people who love music like we do. Ghosts of Sunset are committed to delivering a rock n roll experience every night. Always preaching the gospel…
