Album Review: Furnace – Dark Vistas (Soulseller Records)

Swedish death metal trio Furnace will release the concept album ‘Dark Vistas’ October 9th 2020 on Soulseller Records. Dark Vistas is conceptual death metal in a melodic, thrashing and gothic setting.

Comprised of members from Paganizer, Demiurg and Assassins Blade, as well as Cult of the Fox and Void Moon, this Swedish outfit explores a new melodic death metal vista of sorts. It’s still death metal, but it’s also much more. Delve deep into the Lovecraftian and cult-riddled mythos of Furnace with Dark Vistas.

Lovecraftian themes and inspiration is not exactly a rarity in metal so if you’re going to do a concept album around that sort of thing, you have to work hard at it. Furnace work hard at it and Dark Vistas is an album that grabs you by the hand and drags you into a horrifying world. One filled with darkness, unnatural things and grotesque sounds.

Kicking off with the energetic and rocking groove of Suburban Nightmare. It’s less intense then you might expect from death metal but fear not, that’s coming with the following The Other Ones and The Calling. A frantic and darkness covered pairing.

Although if you want riffs to head-bang too then Yog-Sothoth (The Key and the Gateway) is where you need to look. An absolute beast of a track but far from alone with A Journey Through Dark Vistas, Escape and From the Blackest Void keeping things nice and twisted.

There’s a ton of quality to be found throughout and Furnace truly deliver on the journey into cold and lifeless worlds.
