EP Review: The Riven – 7″ (The Sign Records)
Following the success of their self-titled debut album (read our review here), Swedish retro rockers The Riven are back with new material. On August 28th, the band will release a 7″ double single featuring the songs Windbreaker and Moving On.
The blues-tinged riff machine that is The Riven impressed us back when we reviewed their debut. An album that provided high-energy rock and roll tunes across 44 minutes. Unsurprisingly, this 7” does more of the same but in a much more contained and refined way.
That’s a super-important element. The refinement and tightness that The Riven portray on the two tracks here. They still have that old-school rock and roll sound and the chill out vibes they give out are strong. However, it feels less like a tribute here and more like The Riven are their own thing.
Two super catchy efforts, it’s near impossible to not be singing along to Moving On and dancing to Windbreaker. The riffs are thrown about but with a lot of care, the vocals are powerful yet don’t over-reach and the bass/drum combo add weight. Resulting in a 7” that shows The Riven have a very bright future.
