Band Interview: Decline The Fall
Games, Brrraaains & A Head-Banging Life are pleased to bring you an interview with Kris Farrugia (Rhythm Guitarist) of progressive melodic metal band, Decline the Fall.
1. How did you get started as a band?
We started off around 5 years. I remember receiving a recording of a song which a friend of mine had written with his band and I had liked the direction. He asked me to go down to practice when I’m up for it and that’s when I basically met John. From the members present on that day, John is the only one left and therefore, the founder of the band which eventually evolved into Decline the Fall.
2. How would you describe your sound?
We prioritise melody, both guitarwise and especially vocally. Most importantly though, we need our sound to express emotion, strength and resolve. In my case, my own influences helped me gain an understanding of not only the way I play but especially what emotion I want to portray accordingly. Then of course, you turn your influences into your own sound.
3. What bands/artists would you say have influenced your style of music?
Iced Earth was by far one of my major influences. Being a self-taught guitarist, I learnt my way of playing by listening and trying to copy Iced Earth songs. So, from a technical perspective, definitely Iced Earth. However, bands like In Flames, Trivium and Bullet For My Valentine were a massive influence a few years ago, whereas my most recent influences were definitely bands like Periphery and Erra.
4. Has the rise of YouTube & music streaming helped or hindered you as a band?
I personally believe it has helped us, especially the way how all these algorithms work; there is a better chance of people listening to other bands within our style to actually ‘bump’ into us and listen to us. Of course, it also means more competition, but if you aim high – competition can only do you good.
5. What do you enjoy doing when you’re not making music?
I’m also a self-taught photographer tackling mainly portraits photography, not to mention a massive anime fan! So generally, if I’m not editing photoshoots, I’m normally watching anime or on the playstation!
6. What are your future plans musically? Tours?
We are about to release our first album this year, so that is our first priority, after which we will be relocating to Slovenia where we can have better access to perform in different countries within a drive away. Our aim is most certainly to score a tour, so being in Slovenia will definitely aid and simplify this possibility.
