Some Zombie Movies That Are A Must-Watch For All Horror Movie Lovers
Zombie movies are a genre unto itself and have always had a large fan following. Typically the films have a storyline where humans are infected by some strange virus or disease which mostly makes them cannibalistic. This condition is hugely infectious and the rules of the game is for the survivors to remain unaffected as far as possible and even look out for one another.
Zombie films usually qualify as horror but they can also venture into comedy and drama. These kinds of films are increasingly becoming popular as many people believe that they mirror the way society is progressing. With everyone so hooked onto social media and wearable technology, this can be understood. Wearable technology in particular as grown leaps and bounds and some can even detect cancer as this article here states. This kind of technology might be of great use to humanity but an addiction to it could make humans more asocial and unempathetic towards fellow humans which is the closest to being a zombie. Keeping those metaphors in mind, here are a few zombie movies you must watch.
Dead Don’t Die
Jim Jarmusch is one of the greatest indie filmmakers of our generation having released such brilliant movies like Coffee and Cigarettes, Broken Flowers and Stranger than Paradise. So when he dives into the zombie genre, it’s an experience one should not miss. Dead Don’t Die was released in 2019 and features a star cast including Bill Murray, Adam Driver and Chloe Sevigny. A sleepy town gets invaded by zombies that are basically corpses coming out of their graves. As they attack the residents of the town, they are also hooked onto things they were addicted to when they were alive like their phone screens and coffee. It’s a wonderful little commentary on the evils of consumption culture and how at the end of the day, we are all zombies of capitalism. There’s enough funnies and gore to keep you riveted.
Les Affames
Les Affames is a Canadian-French film set in Quebec, Canada. The survivors are a bunch of very different characters from old gun-toting women to a woman in a business suit. There is only one surviving man in the group. The zombies of Les Affames are different from the usual ones in the movies because they seem to have a bit of culture and even make things in their spare time. These zombies also take over spaces that belong to the non-zombies driving them out further and further into the countryside. This could be a commentary on the changing political landscape of Quebec with the incoming population from across the world and resulting unrest which is described in this article here.
Zombieland
A 2009 release, Zombieland is one of the greatest zombie films in recent times. It stars Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg and Emma Stone among others. There’s also a really funny cameo by Bill Murray. The film is set in a post-apocalyptic world where a bunch of survivors are making a journey across America to get to their loved ones. One of the key things to remember for them is to not be emotionally attached to anyone as they could die any time. Written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, it is said that Harrelson agreed to act in the film under a few conditions one of which was that the director was not allowed to eat dairy products.
Some notable classics worth checking out include Dawn of the Dead, Night of the Comet, Demons and Living Dead. These should set you off on your exploration of the zombie genre.
