Album Review: Cemetery Filth – Dominion (Unspeakable Axe Records/Boris Records)
Atlanta-based death metal band Cemetery Filth are set to release their long-awaited debut full-length album, Dominion on April 13th 2020.
Despite waiting until 2020 to unleash their debut album, Cemetery Filth are no newcomers to death metal. The band released the Screams from the Catacombs EP in 2014, contributed to the first 4 Doors to Death compilation in 2016, and followed that a year later with a split EP with Sewercide.
Momentum for the band slowed after that. Until now. Cemetery Filth has made good on six years of grinding it out in the trenches with the arrival of Dominion. This album is nothing less than a gauntlet thrown down at the feet of every flavor-of-the-week death metal outfit. Dominion is the band’s personal statement of what death metal should sound like when done the right way.

Take that for what you will, maybe you agree that there are far too many ‘poser’ death metal bands or maybe, like us, you think death metal is a fair bit more open these days and that’s no bad thing. Regardless, what we can agree on is that Cemetery Filth aren’t messing around here and Dominion is certainly a statement of intent.
The intent being nothing but explosive fury and the result being a lot of damaged and scarred bodies.
Deep and guttural, the guitars and drums cut deep lines of terror thorough the mind while the vocals spray forth a vomitous display of gurgling and howling. If it wasn’t for the moments of cleaner guitar soloing, Dominion would be a tough listen. At least at this pace and for 9 tracks.
Thankfully, those guitars slay and lift the likes of Exhumed Visions out of the death metal doldrums.
Although they really do nail how to be simply uncomfortably heavy in a seemingly unending way. The brutality of Paralytic Scourge, Aeons in Dis and Festering Vacuity as sharp to the senses as smelling salts.
