Band Interview: Alien Cargo
Games, Brrraaains & A Head-Banging Life are pleased to bring you an interview with sci-fi themed fuzz-rock band, Alien Cargo!
1. How did you get started as a band?
The band was formed in Trondheim in late 2018 by Jonas, Alex and Vebjørn. We were the last remnants left after a previous band, and decided we wanted to keep playing together. The sci-fi theme and band name was a result of the singer’s fascination for strange phenomena. We got a lot of material ready in a couple of months and then recorded our first EP, which was released in January 2020.
2. How would you describe your sound?
Alternative fuzzrock with a sci-fi twist. The three members have very different musical backgrounds, which helps to explain the mildly scizophrenic sound. While the music isn’t that experimental in terms of song structure and instrumentation, we focus on making the lyrics and song titles as original and distinctive as possible. The artwork is also important to us in terms of establishing a recognizable style.
3. What bands/artists would you say have influenced your style of music?
Dinosaur Jr., Black Sabbath, Sleater-Kinney, Arctic Monkeys. There aren’t that many bands we all agree on, however, so a lot can be traced back to our individual influences rather than group influences.
4. Has the rise of YouTube & music streaming helped or hindered you as a band?
It’s certainly easier to make music accessible now. Of course with so much music accessible it’s harder than ever to stand out and leave an impression. We are happy that our music is readily available on streaming services etc., and otherwise do our best to spread the disease.
5. What do you enjoy doing when you’re not making music?
Read science fiction & watch the news, both inexhaustible sources of inspiration. The two can’t really be separated anymore, which is one of the points we’re trying to make with this project. We also enjoy cooking (Vebjørn) and ridiculing people who enjoy cooking (Jonas).
6. What are your future plans musically? Tours?
Write and record more material, and definitely do some touring too. We plan to do a second round of recording this spring, and hopefully release a few singles later this year before doing a small tour. After that, we’ll see. But we are stubborn enough to keep this band going regardless of what happens.
