Band Interview: Asylus
Games, Brrraaains & A Head-Banging Life are pleased to bring you an interview with experimental metalcore band, Asylus.
1. Hello! Thanks for taking the time to speak with us. Can you tell us a little about your formation and history?
No problem. Thanks for having us. Asylus started 2013 and has been going strong ever since. Started when Mel (drummer) and Naz (vocalist) came together to create it after their previous project “I Take This Oath” parted ways. Asylus has been through a few different members and musical changes but we love the direction it is heading in right now for sure.
2. How would you describe your sound?
Naz likes to describe it as experimental metalcore. It’s got a lot of different things fused into it such as, metal, hip-hop, r&b, dark pop, and EDM.
3. What do you use as inspiration in regards to both the music and lyrics?
As far as musical inspirations Jason Butler from “Fever 333” Veil of Maya, Issues, Post Malone, and Scarlxrd. Lyrics wise it’s really a mash of a lot of stuff. A lot of it comes from personal experiences or stories that have affected us other times just concepts and toying with progressive thoughts definitely puts the thumbprint on our lyric inspiration.
4. What has been the highlight of your career so far?
Definitely our last Holiday show at Chain Reaction. We host one every year for the past four years. Last years in 2019 though was absolutely nuts and I think one the band will cherish for a very long time.
5. What is the dream?
To enter the game and change the way music is made, listened too, and viewed by influencing others to create something different. Also just starting a movement that is positive and place for anyone to come and feel at home.
6. What are your thoughts on the rise of streaming services/YouTube? Are you benefiting from the whole ‘music at our fingertips’ world we live in now?
Absolutely insane. A few years ago, artist and bands were really at the feet of not creating their own destiny. With the platforms and streaming services now and amount of information you can collect from the internet is AMAZING and has benefited us in a huge way. We love the fact that you can create a piece of content that can be reached and heard instantly by someone Miles away from you just by creating solid consistent content. It’s a good day to be an artist/band for sure.
7. What do you enjoy doing when you’re not making music? Any gamers/horror film buffs in the midst?
Usually just kicking it for the most part we are always making something haha. Erick (Lead Guitarist) Davon (Vocals/Keys) and Chris (Rhythm Guitarist) all play video games. Erick likes League of Legends, COD, and Destiny, Davon really only likes Cod and a few others, Chris Is huge into simulations and Milsim type shooters, Naz plays switch occasionally and love Pokémon, and Mel loves hearing us talk about all of it. Haha
8. What’s going on in 2020? Any big plans?
Asylus: We just played NAMM at the Legator booth that was rad. We have a few playthrough videos coming out, be on the lookout for some runs maybe, live shows, release of some singles, and overall just steady content on all streaming platforms. We released our single “The Wave” go check it out it’s the best description of our new sound, and cheers to 2020.
