Album Review: Krosis – A Memoir of Free Will (Unique Leader)

North Carolina progressive deathcore group Krosis have announced that they will release their expansive and musically adventurous new album, A Memoir of Free Will, on February 7th via Unique Leader.

Drummer Dan Cece said of the album:

A Memoir of Free Will, simply put, is a massive culmination of many things that we were finally able to put together. It is the apex of our evolution over the past year in a musical sense, but also in a personal sense. We wanted a huge conceptual vision coupled with an equally huge sound that was refined and honed, yet still undeniably Krosis. We couldn’t be prouder to say that this album is all that and more. We wanted something big, really big; something that a listener couldn’t digest in just one or two listens. We’ve never been more excited to present a creation to you all and hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

The word is massive. It is the perfect summation of what this technical and brutalising metal album is. A massive album of heaviness, a massive album of progressive noise, a massive album of melodic highs and savage deathcore lows. It’s truly a sound to behold and one that requires an incredible amount of dissection to fully appreciate.

Though that doesn’t mean it isn’t instantly pleasing, it just means the abrupt changes in style and sound become far less jarring.

The equivalent of trying to hold onto a lively snake inside a pool of of grease while having your hands tied behind your back. There is no easy way to grasp tracks like Gone, But Not Forgotten and the title track. Instead it’s better to just be washed along, relax and enjoy the ride. You can think about the mental and physical damage afterwards.

Even the shorter, more deathcore intensely focused tracks like Insanity: A Moniker of Me, Psychoticlysm and With Virtue, I Am Free are the equivalent of being blindfolded, thrown into dark cave and told to find your way out by listening to the sounds of Krosis. You’ll go mad just trying to line your thoughts up as the band repeatedly smash you over the head only to offer brief comfort before turning their ire on you again.

Curl up into a ball and take the beating you know you deserve.
