Band Interview: Insolace

Games, Brrraaains & A Head-Banging Life are pleased to bring you an interview with alternative rockers, Insolace.

1. How did you get started as a band?

Well, Conor is the founding member, and Insolace came to life after his former band Oceans came to a natural end. I (Sam) auditioned for Oceans in June 2018, and got the part. So when Conor decided to part with the other half of the band, I wanted to stick around as I saw potential in his next project. Between October 2018 and March 2019 it was quite difficult as we auditioned many musicians, most not quite meeting the criteria we were looking for. Thankfully though, over the course of that time we found Onyi, Regan and Millie, and now we’re here!

2. How would you describe your sound?

Very emotive. I think there’s quite a distinct and unique contrast between Conor’s song writing and Millie’s vocal style and melodies. The blend is something very special and it’s great to work alongside musicians who all differ slightly musically in someways, but make it work in such a positive manner.

3. What bands/artists would you say have influenced your style of music?

I share many influences with Conor, so you could say primary influences are bands such as Tool, Pantera, Metallica etc. We also love upcoming bands like Vukovi, Yonaka.

4. Has the rise of YouTube & music streaming helped or hindered you as a band?

From my point of view I think it’s a bit of both. In one case, many people can be spoon fed their music now, just by sitting down and scrolling through online platforms such as YouTube and iTunes which I think can hinder attendance at gigs. But on the other hand online music streaming seems to be where it’s at now to promote your music, and is so much easier than going around handing out flyers and putting up posters for your gigs. So it’s a bit of a double edged sword for me.

5. What do you enjoy doing when you’re not making music?

I personally enjoy playing football. I played at quite a high level when I was younger but it took a backseat in my priorities when I discovered how much I loved writing and performing music. Keeping fit in general is something I enjoy doing.

6. What are your future plans musically? Tours?

Yeah, I think 2020 is the year we’re really looking to kick on. We’ve got a plan of what we have to do as a band to keep progressing and achieving our goals, so obvious things like touring, continuous writing and recording are all things we’re looking to do as a routine for next year and beyond.
