13 Days of Halloween Horror Interview: Iñi Childrain (Childrain)
As part of 2019’s 13 Days of Halloween, we here at Games, Brrraaains & A Head-Banging Life thought it would be fun to see if some of the bands and artists we love had any interest in horror. It turns out quite a lot do so we turned it into an interview.
1. First things first…introduce yourself please!
Hello, this is Iñi, vocalist for Childrain, really pleased to be here.
2. What are your top 3 favourite horror movies and why?
The Exorcist: A masterpiece, really well done. I do believe in possession, so it drove me crazy. It was a forbidden film during my childhood, so the expectations were high. It didn’t disappoint. The scene where the devil reflects in the kitchen is pure evil.
Ringu: Japanese version, much better than American. It’s really dark and the photography gets you anxious. Just after watching it, the phone rang, so you can imagine my reaction… it was a joke from a friend. I hate my friends hahaha.
The Others: Its lighter than the previous ones, but the narrative and the final surprise blew my head off. It’s a constant stress, wondering what the hell happens there.
3. Do you remember your first experience with horror? Was it at a young age?
Of course, I do. There were two highlights. The first one, a very good friend of mine had a horror collection (his parents) and there was the IT VHS, staring at me. I had goosebumps every time I saw it, but it was later that I watched the movie. The other one was watching “for error” Child´s Play. I had around 11 years and I regretted every minute I saw from it, it caused a kind of trauma to me. I didn’t watch any horror movies till I was in my twenties, so it was truly significant.
4. What era of horror is your favourite & why?
I don´t have a favourite era, to be honest. I do enjoy good films, but maybe in the 80´s and 90´s they had to improve in the script and acting more and not let the special FXs make the film by themselves… this is something applicable to the film industry in general. The other day I saw Joker, that was a hell of a film, and no explosions, handsome guys and muscles were involved. It was just acting, script and photography. Masterpiece.
5. What frightens or creeps you out in horror?
Well, as you might know, I have out of the body experiences, so films like Insidious or Paranormal Activity are REAL for me. Those kinds of films are disturbing, they are like a documentary of certain things that happen to myself, so that´s what blows my mind.
6. Who is your horror inspiration? Be it a director/actor/author etc.
Stephen King. It´s incredible to see the amount of films that are based on his books, it´s ridiculous haha, it’s around 50? Wow that guy must be living in a mansion with diamonds in the walls. He is brilliant and looks himself as a deranged motherfucker.
7. Do you enjoy modern horror or do you look to the past for your fix?
As said before, I need a good script and good acting, not only shouting and running. If the film includes both, no matter when it was filmed. New error has something I really like, the sound effects are simply great, but some movies base all the horror dose on those sounds, that´s not working for me.
8. What horror movie is universally beloved that you just don’t like?
Someone surely will have aims to punch me after this, but I just don´t like Rosemary´s Baby. It was slow and boring for me. It scared me the same as a bowl of corn flakes would do, so you can imagine. I need to think that it’s a good movie, but I don´t get it.
9. If you could shoot one horror cliché/trope into the sun to never be used again. What would it be?
The American youngsters going to a cabin into the woods. That’s only legit for porn use.
10. Same question but about type/style. What type or style of horror would you happily never watch again?
Gore horror, its simply disgusting for me. Will have a talk with Gwar guys about this in the next tour hahaha.
11. What gets you excited when watching horror?
The constant pressure of not knowing what to expect next. It´s great as you never get bored or lose the attention.
12. Have you had any real life scary experiences? We’re talking supernatural or something that can’t be reasonably explained.
Well, as said before, tons of them. The fictional line between a movie and real life for me is blurry in many cases. I have experienced many petrifying moments, but with time and seeking for information, it gets exciting. Can´t name them all over here, but involve things that move by themselves, strange presences, and even a little girl from another era screaming for help in my room. Very normal. I don’t have a mental illness as you would imagine hahaha. I neither do drugs, just to put clear here hahaha.

It Follows, but with my girlfriend next to me, I can´t see any horror film alone. That´s not very metal, but it’s the truth!
