Album Review: Karyn Crisis’ Gospel of the Witches – Covenant (Aural Music)

Karyn Crisis’ Gospel Of the Witches is the brainchild of two visionaries: Karyn Crisis (ex-Crisis) and Davide Tiso (Ephel Duath, Howling Sycamore). Their debut Salem’s Wounds was released by Century Media records with worldwide critical acclaim in 2015, and now it’s time for a brand new album.

Titled ‘Covenant’ and featuring Fabian Vestod (Skinlab) on drums, it offers 12 songs of the finest Occult Metal — from evil heaviness to ambient passages invoking very ancient concepts and vibrations of the realm of the Goddesses and those who celebrate their magic on earth.

Creepy, unsettling and disturbing. Karyn Crisis’ Gospel of the Witches can be summed up with just those three words. The review could be as simple as us saying, this is an album that enflames the soul and entrances the mind. Almost as though a witch had cast a spell over things.

Shrouded in darkness, the lightness that does erupt from the occasional track is not one of hope but rather the arrival of something sinister and terrible. Blending old-school riffs with eerie clean singing, beastly growls and ritualistic beats, the 12 tracks of Covenant fascinate.

Simply put, it’s a bewitching album.

The likes of Drawing Down the Moon, Great Mothers, Benevento, The Hours and Blood of the Mother will leave an undeniably strong impression. Time all but disappears, a coloured haze descends and the chill in the air deepens. Snapping out of it requires strength and reaching the end but the temptation to just hit play again is almost too strong.
