Raptures Lost’s Top 10 Best Games Of E3 2014!

After a frantic couple of days at E3 2014, the dust is finally beginning to settle. We witnessed a huge amount of press conferences showcasing everything we need to know about the up and coming video games that are to be released in 2014 and those that are still in the early stages of development. It was very exciting to see such an emphasis on games and what we can expect to see going into 2015. What was put on display was a huge step forward for the next generation consoles as we’re finally starting to see some serious support in terms of games and content and it’s all just around the corner. The shear quality and quantity of games that were announced was really awesome; it’s an amazing time to be a gamer. This is a top 10 of what I consider to be the best games that appeared at E3 2014:

10 – Cuphead

Cuphead is a side-scrolling indie platformer that really caught my eye during Microsoft’s E3 press conference. The 1930’s art style, animation and music look and sound really amazing and are reminiscent of classic Disney Mickey Mouse cartoons. Unfortunately it has now been delayed until 2015 but I’ll be keeping an eye out for this when it is released so I can throw my money at it.

09 – Star Wars: Battlefront

Not too much detail on this one other than the early in engine footage of the environments that will appear in the game, which happen to look downright breath-taking.

08 – Inside

Playdead has revealed its much anticipated follow-up to hit indie game Limbo, Inside. The game is another 2D side-scrolling puzzle-platformer from the Danish developer, and echoes a similar atmosphere of the studio’s last title. The game features more 3D-style graphics however and is presented in colour. Playdead is said to have been working on the game for the last four years. The title is expected to be released in early 2015 on Xbox One.

07 – Sunset Overdrive

Sunset Overdrive is an upcoming third-person shooter video game developed by Insomniac Games and published by Microsoft Studios exclusively for the Xbox One.
Players navigate the open world metropolis Sunset City in 2027, a dystopian world controlled by the corporation FizzCo. The player character is a FizzCo employee, tasked with cleaning up the mess left behind from a party FizzCo has thrown in celebration of the launch of their new energy drink, Overcharge Delirium XT. Players fight the OD’d humans who have mutated from drinking too much of the energy drink. The game focuses on “agile combat”, including wall running, zip-lines, and acrobatics. Oh man does this game look like a blast or what!? I absolutely love how colourful everything looks.

06 – Ori and the Blind Forest

Ori and the Blind Forest is an action-adventure platformer that combines deep exploratory gameplay with emotional storytelling. Join Ori to solve the mysteries of a dying forest while escaping the evil clutches of Kuro, the dark owl.
If there’s one game that got the biggest emotional response from me during this year’s E3 then it would be this. Not only is the art style, animation and music beautifully done but it seems very similar looking to my favourite Xbox Live Arcade game “Dust: An Elysian Tail” which makes me all kinds of happy, oh and it comes out this year!

05 – Rise Of The Tomb Raider

Still in the very early stages, Rise of the Tomb Raider is the follow up to the recent critically acclaimed reboot “Tomb Raider” which I personally really loved. I really like the concept of Lara being psychologically damaged about the events that took place in the first game and struggling to deal with it all. I am highly anticipating an amazing adventure with many Tombs’ to explore as Lara gathers her strength to become who she was born to be.

04 – Dragon Age: Inquisition

As this is one of the games that I have currently pre-ordered it makes me very happy that every time I see just about anything from the game it looks better and better.

03 – No Man’s Sky

No Man’s Sky is a forthcoming science-fiction game about exploration and survival in an infinite procedurally generated universe. Words cannot really describe how astonishingly good the trailer for this game looks and it truly hurts me that it will be coming to PS4 first and not Xbox One, well done Sony.

02 – Far Cry 4

I was a little bit skeptical when I heard that Far Cry 4 would be set in the Himalayas but all of my reservations were put to rest when I saw the two trailers below. One of the trailers is the first 5 minutes of the game and introduces us to the antagonist of the game (king Pagan Min), voiced by Troy baker. What is it with Far Cry games being able to create really awesome, memorable bad guys?

01 – The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Actual gameplay footage of The Witcher 3, there was only going to be one winner as far as I was concerned. This game has the potential to be the game of the generation, I know it’s really early to say that but if everything is done right and polished to perfection then I truly do believe it to be the case.
