Album Review: Zeresh – Farewell (Self Released)

On the 1st of September atmospheric dark-folk/depressive doom project, Zeresh will release its debut album entitled ‘Farewell’. The project is the work of Tamar Singer and Farewell is somewhat of a concept album. One which was written over many years and includes some of his oldest plus some of his newest songs.

In many ways, it is a sequel and a direct continuation of his debut EP ‘Sigh For Sigh’, which was released in 2018. It features guest appearances from the likes of:

Sara Krasemann (Darkwood), Michael Zolotov (Kadaver), Ayelet Rose Gottlieb and Vlad Shusterman (Ghost Bike, Cruel Wonders, White Mourning).

Farewell

Farewell is a very atmospheric album, that much is clear from the start. It’s heavily covered in dark ambience, playing off the folkish melodies while sounding delectably ancient. The Harvest Moon might sound really mellow but it has an underlying threat that builds and builds. Although there is no cathartic release, instead it just ends.

It’s not a problem or a complaint because Farewell is a very chilled and relaxed album. It’s all about creating imagery, relaxing the mind, body and soul while also delivering sharp jabs of darkness.

Haunting and morose, it’s a memorable listen because of how it makes you feel. The boldness of how depressive it can be (A Farewell) will leave some feeling cold but still capable of admiring what Zeresh has accomplished here.

When the folkier elements are heightened, Farewell is at its strongest. It is the guitar strumming of The Lake Isle of Innisfree that makes that track stand out. Or the chanting of Virtues that conjures up a world hidden from sight and not meant for outsiders to see or understand. This latter track twists into one of the darker ambient soundscapes on the album. As if the aforementioned chanting conjured up something truly terrifying.

The best track on the album comes at the end though. All Perished is soft and warm sounding with some expertly done vocals that comfort. The melody is emotionally outstanding.
