Album Review: Total Hate – Throne Behind A Black Veil (Eisenwald)

Staying true to the ways of old, German black metal act Total Hate is preparing to release its fourth misanthropic album “Throne Behind A Black Veil”, due on August 2nd via Eisenwald.

Throne Behind A Black Veil sees the Franconian band once again en route to present the ferocious and cold sound of painkilling black metal altitudes of the 1990s. Much like previous outputs, Total Hate — known for its luminaries and zealots in the sphere of ancient black metal — continues the path set forth by bands such as Darkthrone, Urgehal, Gorgoroth, Throne of Ahaz and others.

Hailing from the Bavarian woods of Germany, Total Hate unifies the essence of Scandinavia’s true black metal sound. Emerging as a side project of sorts in 2000, the band pays homage to the second wave of black metal with its original blend of orthodox and primitive blackened frost. “Throne Behind A Black Veil” marks 19 years of existence for the band, and proves some things do get better with age.

The bitter coldness of Total Hate’s vitriol and anger spews forth from an eight-track album that calls upon the past while keeping one eye closely trained on the future. We have here a hellacious listen but one that appeals to the core part of humanity, the part that excites but also sickens.

At its most basic, Throne Behind A Black Veil is a black metal album that would fit cleanly and comfortably amongst the early 90s classics of that scene. Tracks like Psychopath, Thou Shalt Kill (Killing Spree Unleashed) and Death Raid Apocalypse have all the raging noise with the thick vein of bleakness running though them. The sharpness of the riffs cut through like ice knives and the vocals howl like a pack of wolves hungry for flesh.

Bask in the glory of time when black metal wasn’t so complicated and was arguably at its most savage. There are no surprises to be found on Throne Behind A Black Veil, just enjoy it for exactly what is is. Black f**king metal.
