Album Review: Avi Rosenfeld – Very Heepy Very Purple IX and X (Self Released)

It’s been a while since we covered prolific artist Avi Rosenfeld. Not since July 2018 in fact where it was his 39th album, Very Heepy Very Purple VIII that we reviewed here. Before that we also covered Very Heepy Very Purple VII here and Very Heepy Very Purple VI here. Each album offering up quality guitar driven metal.

In the style of Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, Rainbow, Iron Maiden, Dio, Yngwie etc. Avi Rosenfeld has collaborated with an amazing group of vocalists and musicians from all over the world to create his next body of work. A double album, Very Heepy Very Purple IX and Very Heepy Very Purple X.

Those familiar with Avi Rosenfeld’s Very Heepy Very Purple releases up to this point will find plenty to enjoy on this double album offering. It’s more old-school rock and metal riffing and singing with the odd surprise here and there.

It’s been a while so the familiarity is welcome especially as Rosenfeld really gets how to deliver guitar driven head-bangers and booty-shakers. Part IX brings us such highlights as the stellar-sounding Lost Behind the Enemy Lines, the absolute powerhouse vocal performance of Sorcerer and the slightly sleazy and sexy riffing of Crazy Woman.

IX also throws out a surprise or two. Surprises such as the heavier vocal performance of Dead End and the proggier guitars of Desert Wind. Both tracks really stand out as something a little different for Very Heepy Very Purple.

Part X gives us fast tempo old-school riffing for the first couple of tracks before Rivals really steps forth and delivers a dirty bit of groove. The foot-tapping rhythm of this one is killer followed by the double banger of Sabbath and Hit the Lights.

Of the two, Part IX seems to offer more variation in sound but part X is way more memorable. It’s way easier to hit ‘play again’ on the grooviness of Mountains of Snow and the air-guitar inspired Defenders of the King.

Both quality releases yet again. We look forward to seeing what Part XI holds!
