Single Slam – What Are The Cargo Pockets for Lanza? Extra Mags? by Neckbeard Deathcamp (So Much for the Tolerant Left)
Left wing, anti fascist black metal/grind band Neckbeard Deathcamp return with a new single called What are the Cargo Pockets for Lanza? Extra mags? It will feature on the bands sophomore album called So Much for the Tolerant Left. The album is due out on the 24th of May via Prosthetic Records.
Speaking about the album, the band released the following statement.
“In wrath-fuelled allegiance with the rising fires ov antifascist metal in America and in support ov their Free Speech in America tour with Dryad, No Convictions, Theories, and Wvrm. NECKBEARD DEATHCAMP presents the second assault ov their unstoppable crusade SO MUCH FOR THE TOLERANT LEFT. SO MUCH FOR THE TOLERANT LEFT was recorded with the same contempt for clean production and music theory as WHITE NATIONALISM IS FOR BASEMENT DWELLING LOSERS and is forty minutes ov relentless hostility featuring guest vocals from Denis Boardman ov Doom and Karl Willets ov Bolt Thrower and Memorium”.
Neckbeard Deathcamp are a three piece with the stage names of Hailz Komradez on drums, Superkommando Uberweinerschnitzel on guitars and Kriegmaster Hatesturm on vocals and “noise”. Hailing from the US, they are a satirical jab at far right extremism. Originally designed as a bit of a joke by the band, they went viral after the release of their debut White Nationalism is for Basement Dwelling Losers. Since then they have garnered an army of fans and released two splits and now are on the verge of releasing their second full length. This starts with the single, What are the cargo pockets for Lanza? Extra Mags?.
Obviously the song focuses on Adam Lanza, otherwise known as the Sandy Hook shooter who took the lives of numerous children as well as some teachers at Sandy Hook school in 2012.
So with all that, we know Neckbeard Deathcamp have a powerful mission statement and it is great to see metal leading the charge in uniting people against extremism but we are also here for the music. Is it any good?
Well, no. Not really. “Cargo Pockets” (to save me some time) is 3 and a half minutes of muddy, lo fi noise. Cymbal heavy drum crashes, inaudible growled vocals and a repetitive riff. Mix all that with a bit of distortion, feedback and general noise and you get this song. It is raw and you do get a sense of the aggression within the fog. I must admit to finding something appealing in it though. The dirty rawness, the muddy fog and extreme black metal edge hidden within the mess is strangely hypnotic but good music, this isn’t.
To be fair to Neckbeard Deathcamp this sound is intentional. It is part of the story, or joke. Foggy aggression, sounding like horrific sounds coming forth from a battlefield. I get that, and it does kind of conjure up those images but it is an awkward listen. One I am happy to listen to once or twice but not one I am likely to return to again as it just isn’t very good musically. If you are fans of the band, or just want something more shocking then you should love it though. Either way, check it out and see for yourself.
