Album Review: Chalice of Suffering – Lost Eternally (Transcending Obscurity Records)
Where this kind of doom/death metal goes, it’s more about the emotions than the heaviness, and that’s where Chalice of Suffering excels.
Lost Eternally perfectly encapsulates the grief, the stinging loneliness and its bleak outlook.
The album plods on powerfully despite the weight, showing moments of melodic respite and even contributions from several guest musicians and vocalists to further enhance the proceedings. This is as genuine as it gets right from the underground.
The album will be released on April 19th 2019 via Transcending Obscurity Records.
Chalice of Suffering spend time building up the feeling of isolation with In the Mist That Once was. Mournful melody and the occasional whispered line before lathering darkness-infused doom across the track thickly. Downbeat and dirty, it’s a really twisted take on doom, designed to drag you down to the lowest of lows.
The slow march of the death beat that is Emancipation of Pain is only given some relief thanks to the guttural vocal style that dominates the track. Whereas Forever Winter sinks on towards the depths of hellish doom even further. All before the title track reaches up, wraps its cold and clammy hands around and pulls.
This is a challenging album because most tracks breach the 9/10 minute mark baring the final two. Miss Me, But Let Me Go and Whispers of Madness both only pass the 6 minute mark which is short by comparison to the rest of the album. The former is a little bit more epic while the latter is slow and painful death.
Not music to be played on a bright sunny day as it’s likely to bring about thunder clouds.
