Band Interview – Walk In Coma (Metal 2 the Masses Essex 2019)

Alternative metal band, Walk In Coma, will play in Heat Four of Metal 2 the Masses Essex 2019. They face off against Bribe for the Ferryman, Lynchwood, Unit 33 and Fatality on the 1st of March. The event takes place at The Soundhouse which is at The Bull, Colchester, CO3 3ES.

Each band will be giving their all to try to progress in the competition where the winner receives an amazing opportunity. A much coveted slot playing on the New Blood Stage at Bloodstock Festival, 2019. GBHBL are pleased to bring you a short interview with Walk In Coma to help introduce them further to the metal masses.

1. Why Walk in Coma? Where did the name come from?

The name came from a poem Alex read once. The phrase was “walking coma” – we thought it looked better as three words!

2. Tell us a little about Walk in Coma. How long have you been playing together? Who is in the band? Where are you from? How did you meet?

Mark: Me and Alex met in school, Alex was doing loads of stuff musically and I kinda came in a lot later when we realised we have the same music tastes and started jamming. My brother who used to play drums in a band called Confined Spaces way back split from them so we asked him if he fancied drumming for us. Walk In Coma was then formed as a 3 piece.

Tom: I joined in early 2010 as bassist, along with a new drummer after Mark’s brother left. Many drummers later, we’ve now got Joe who’s been with us since 2014.

3. What artists, metal or otherwise, have influenced you and your sound?

With our early stuff, there was a lot of 90s grunge influence like Soundgarden and Alice In Chains. That influence is still there, as well as bands like Slipknot, Deftones, Lamb of God and Architects. We’ve all got our own individual influences too which helps bring an interesting mix to the table.

4. With so many genres and sub genres around these days, what genre would you put yourself in?

We’ve always struggled to answer that! We tend to say “alternative metal”. We’ve got lots of heavy sections obviously, as well as softer parts, a mix of clean and heavy vocals, and we’ve got strings, keyboards as well as electronics, so “alternative metal” covers all the bases really.

5. What will you bring to the Metal to the Masses heats? What can music lovers expect and how are you going to win their support on the night?

We pride ourselves on a really tight, energetic and exciting live performance no matter what. We’re all active on stage, have fun and love interacting with the audience too.

6. Any horror fans in the band? What are some of your favourite horror movies or books?

Tom: Yeah, definitely! Classics for me are Hellraiser, Jacob’s Ladder, Alien and Suspiria. There’s some great modern horror too like Let the Right One In, The Witch, February, and The Babadook. I also really enjoyed the remake of Suspiria. As for books, the best horrors I’ve ever read are Naomi’s Room by Jonathan Aycliffe, Haunted by Chuck Palahnuik, and House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski. Mark is a big Walking Dead fan too.

7. How about games? What’s your console or game of choice?

Tom: PS4 for me! I’m currently playing the Resident Evil 2 remake, and love the Final Fantasy, Silent Hill, Fallout and Tomb Raider franchises.

Joe: PS4 all day – God Of War is the best game ever, followed up my Horizon Zero Dawn, Spider-Man and the Bioshock Games. Loving Arkham Knight at the moment.

8. Have you been to Bloodstock Festival before?

Tom: Bloodstock was my first ever festival back in 2006!

9. If yes, what is it you love most about the festival?

We definitely rate the diversity of it, every year there’s something for everybody from hard rock to extreme metal.

11. Aside from hopefully playing Bloodstock Festival, what else do you have lined up for 2019? Any releases due or tours/gigs/festivals line up?

We’re playing in Leeds in April which we’re excited for as that’ll be our first venture up north for a gig! We’ve also started writing and demoing for a full length album which we hope to be recording towards the end of the year.
