Album Review: DeeVer – You Need This (Self Released)
After writing, and releasing two albums with his previous classic rock outfit (the second of which made it to number 1 in the official U.K. rock charts), Billy Taylor (ex-Inglorious) decided to construct a band with a sound more fitting to his own more modern taste.
Enter DeeVer…
The band is made up of frontman Wil ‘Billy’ Taylor, bassist Phil Appleton, drummer Higgy and guitarist Stevie Stoker. Deever’s debut album ‘You Need This’ is out 1st February 2019.
Ticking all the boxes for a modern rock outfit, DeeVer seem ready made for radio play with catchy and unassuming tracks like Fire at Will. With plenty of guitar groove, good vocals and a little bit of snarl it’s decent stuff.
All Come Running is a step up though with some nice bass, a catchy chorus and a horn-throwing solo before Alright and Back Down keep the groove heading in the right direction. Nothing wrong with any of the tracks so far, just good rock music with little to get too excited about.
There’s plenty of energy in the riffs of Waves but it doesn’t really try hard enough to grab the attention and this theme follows throughout the remainder of the album. DeeVer may be great at playing but what they deliver doesn’t really create any emotion be it love or hate. It’s hard to feel anything but appreciation for some good groove rock.
There are tracks that are little ahead of the pack though such as Only Enemy and its higher tempo as well as the body-shaking finale of I Am the Calvary. There’s no denying that on these tracks showings, DeeVer could certainly grab the attention of mainstream rock fans.
